Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using these medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
