British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
