Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
