The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
