Presence
Soderbergh challenges his directorial skills through this innovative supernatural story shot entirely from the viewpoint of a ghost. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their fresh home, the filming device – representing the ghost – follows them around. The teen shows signs of conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Cage fully commits to his eccentric image via this meta comedy caper. The Black Phone Horror
The director's contained scarefest remains effective without requiring a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, multiple kidnappings has made the local kids on edge. Once Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a dungeon, he dreads a fatal end. However, the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, as the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen could save him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor plays the greedy Jim, who declares initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals commence capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, however Jessica Chastain achieves to present the character with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, late night, on Film4
Black Bag
The current week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh is a spy mystery as sharp as the polo necks worn by Fassbender's British agent.
